The Surface Today is a small, live view of the internet for people who want context without entering an endless feed.
A finite surface, refreshed hourly
Each regional News and YouTube list targets four ranked leaders and one separately labelled constructive choice. A list may contain fewer items while verified rows are still being established. There is no infinite scroll, recommendation loop, or attempt to keep you on the site after you are caught up.
How stories reach the surface
The Surface Today compares recent article titles from a reviewed roster of newsrooms over one complete trailing 24-hour window. Closely matching titles are grouped into stories, and each independent newsroom family contributes at most one coverage vote.
News attention data is derived from the GDELT Project. GDELT supplies source metadata; the linked publishers remain the sources of record.
Global and US lists are ranked independently by newsroom-family coverage. Topic, viewpoint, sentiment, geography, perceived importance, and positivity do not change the attention order. This is a roster-relative attention estimate—not a claim about private publisher traffic, truth, or universal importance. Every brief shows its scoped ranking evidence and links to the reviewed reporting.
How videos reach the surface
During the current launch phase, YouTube shows an independent US selection: four videos from YouTube's United States most-popular chart response and one reviewed Learning & Ideas choice. Global YouTube collection and display are disabled while we confirm the multi-region methodology with YouTube. News remains available for both Global and US.
We exclude Shorts, very short clips, unusually long uploads, obvious synthetic-media signals, unavailable players, and repeats. The page shows the public chart evidence behind each selection. Creator and genre labels provide context; they are not selection quotas. A video cannot return after leaving the surface for 30 days, and playback starts only when you choose it.
Learning & Ideas candidates may also come from a published catalogue of educational channels. Catalogue inclusion only creates eligibility; the same availability, duration, novelty, and safety rules still apply. The temporary US mode does not display a custom ordinal ranking or derived chart evidence.

What the brief is—and is not
A bounded writer may turn an already ranked, validated News source pack into an original headline, brief, and “Why it matters” section. It cannot browse, choose sources, or change the ranking. If writing is unavailable, the stored source evidence and ranking remain intact. YouTube selections are assembled without AI writing. The Surface Today does not store or republish publisher article bodies; follow the reporting links for detail, context, and updates.
